ARTinD Celebrates the Work of Eight International Architects with a Unique Collaborative Project Featuring
Ben Van Berkel
Piero and Nathalie Sartogo
Phillips is pleased to announce that, in collaboration with ARTinD, it will bring together world-renowned architects from across the globe to participate in the first of a series of creative endeavors. Eight architects have been selected to design a carpet as part of a project that explores the blurring of traditional domains between art, craft and design. Ben Van Berkel, Peter Eisenman, Norman Foster, Sou Fujimoto, Thom Mayne, Alessandro Mendini, Piero and Nathalie Sartogo, and Peter Zumthor will all respond to a specific theme, the Golden Section, in order to create a unique carpet. The eight resulting carpets will be exhibited in London in April 2018 during Phillips’ Design season, and subsequently they will be sold through a silent auction.
The eight architects will take inspiration from the Golden Section, the criteria for harmonic proportions between two geometrical shapes. The Golden Section ratio, 1:1:61, occurs throughout nature, from the shape of our universe, to the structure of clouds, and the proportions of the human body. Each work will be handcrafted in Persia, with the highest quality silk and colored with natural dyes, giving an unrivalled natural light to the yarn. The carpet is an important spatial element of the interior landscape and this unique project brings together a varying group of architects, celebrating their singular viewpoints and artistic integrity whilst emphasizing the shifts in artisanal traditions and the crossover between art, craft and design.
